Nail Gel 101: A Nail Tech Guide to Every Gel System
Nail gel covers six different product systems, and mixing them up is the number one reason lifting, over-filing and callback appointments happen. Here is what each one does, when to reach for it, and the Muse application steps from disinfect to top coat.
The short answer
Nail gel is any product cured under UV or LED light instead of air-dried. Six systems sit under that name. Gel polish is colour. Base gels are the adhesion layer underneath. Liquid polygel, builder gel and tube polygel all add length, structure and strength, each with a different working feel. Tailor and pedicure bases give a natural finish with wear.
The system you choose decides the prep and the removal. Gel polish over a soak-off base comes off with acetone. Builder gel and polygel over a bonded primer are filed off. Using the wrong removal method is what damages a natural nail, not the gel itself.
The basics
What is nail gel, really?
At its simplest, a gel manicure is a clear base coat plus a gel overlay, cured under UV or LED light rather than air-dried like traditional lacquer. That is the foundation every gel system builds on.
From there a tech adds structure, length or colour depending on what the natural nail can carry and what the client is asking for. Same category, three very different jobs.

Gel Polish
Colour. Muse gel polishes are one coat. If a shade is meant to be semi-transparent you can lay a second coat when you want fuller coverage, but one is the standard.
Gel polish is not limited to natural nails either. It goes over any of our systems: over a base gel, over builder gel, over liquid polygel. Sculpt first, then colour on top.

Base Gels
The layer that decides whether everything above it stays on. A base gel goes straight onto the prepped natural nail and gives the rest of the system something to hold. Clear bases sit invisible under colour. Creator and CoverUp bases carry tint, so you get colour and reinforcement in the same step.
Our Anti-Lifting Base is the sticky one, formulated HEMA-free and TPO-free, and it works under other coloured bases, builder gels, polygels and liquid polygel alike.

Liquid Polygel
The original Muse formula and still the one clients ask for by name. Length, structure and strength, with some formulas built close to acrylic for serious hold, but with enough flex left in them that the nail moves instead of snapping. No lifting, no cracking.
HEMA-free across the whole range, and the range is going TPO-free, starting with #11 to #13.

Builder Gels
Length, structure and strength, the same job as liquid polygel. What sets it apart is the consistency. Builder gel is a little thicker, so it sits where you put it and gives you more control while you shape. That is why techs newer to sculpting usually find it the easier of the two to pick up.
It is also heat free, so no spike and no client pulling her hand out of the lamp.

Polygel
Our tube polygel, sometimes called acrygel. A thicker paste worked with slip solution and a spatula or brush rather than poured from a bottle, so you place it, press it and shape it before curing. Same job as the sculpting systems above, length, structure and strength, with a different working method that suits techs who came from acrylic.
From #5 up the polygel range is HEMA-free.

Tailor and Pedicure Bases
Natural-look tinted bases for the client who does not want an obvious manicure. Tailor bases give a clean, bare, slightly perfected nail in one step, and they are the easy answer on toes where the brief is durability with a natural finish.

Ingredients
What HEMA-free and TPO-free actually mean
HEMA is a common acrylate in gel systems. Repeated exposure is linked to allergic sensitisation, in clients and in techs, and once someone is sensitised it does not reverse. TPO is a photoinitiator, the ingredient that makes gel cure under the lamp. EU regulators reclassified it as a reproductive toxicant and banned it from cosmetic products on September 1, 2025.
Both terms get thrown around loosely in this industry. Here is the precise version for our range.

Application
The Muse steps, disinfect to top coat
Lifting almost never starts at the top coat. It starts in the first two steps, on a nail plate that was never fully clean. This is the sequence we teach, whichever system you are applying.

Disinfect hands
Start by disinfecting your hands and your client's hands with a quality cleanser such as Muse Nail Cleanser, so the work environment is clean and safe before anything touches the nail.

Prep the nails
Clean, shape and gently buff. Saturate a Muse Lint-Free Wipe with Muse Nail Wipe spray and clean the nail bed thoroughly to remove debris. Then apply a nail prep solution to strip all oil and residue, so the plate is completely free of contaminants.

Build durability
Apply a nail bond to improve adhesion and hold. Follow with a clear base coat such as the Anti-Lifting Base underneath your gel, to add flexibility and protect the natural nail, then cure 30 to 60 seconds under UV or LED.

Apply the Muse gel of your choice
Once the nail is prepped, apply your gel, liquid polygel or builder, and shape it. Cure 60 seconds under the lamp.

Optional design
Add nail art here, or leave the nails as they are. This is also where gel polish goes on top of the polygel or builder layer if the client wants a more vibrant colour.

Seal the look
Finish with your favourite Muse top coat to lock in shine and give the set a long-lasting, durable finish.

Removal
Match the method to the system
Gel polish over a soak-off compatible base normally comes off with acetone. Builder gel and polygel built on a bonded, non-acidic primer resist acetone and are removed mechanically, filed or drilled down with the right bit.
Soaking a system that was never meant to soak is one of the fastest ways to wreck a natural nail plate, because the tech ends up scraping product that has not released. Decide the removal method at the start of the service, not at the end.

How many coats of gel polish do you need?
One. Muse gel polishes are one-coat formulas. If a shade is meant to be semi-transparent you can add a second coat for fuller coverage, but a single coat is the standard.
Can you put gel polish over builder gel or polygel?
Yes. Gel polish goes over any of our systems, including base gels, builder gel and liquid polygel. Sculpt and cure the structure first, then apply colour on top and seal with a top coat.
What is the difference between builder gel and gel polish?
Gel polish is colour only, with no added structural strength. Builder gel is a thicker, self-levelling gel used to reinforce or extend the nail. It adds strength that gel polish cannot.
What is the difference between builder gel and liquid polygel?
Both add length, structure and strength. The difference is consistency and formula. Builder gel is a little thicker and easier to control, and it is heat free, HEMA-free and TPO-free. Liquid polygel is the original Muse formula, slightly thinner, built close to acrylic for strength with enough flex to resist cracking, HEMA-free across the range and TPO-free in #11 to #13. Both are filed off rather than soaked.
What does HEMA-free mean?
HEMA is a common acrylate in gel systems linked to allergic sensitisation in clients and techs after repeated exposure. A HEMA-free formula is made without it. Is nail gel bad for your nails?
Gel systems are not inherently damaging. Poor prep, over-filing during removal and using the wrong removal method are what cause damage. Correct dehydration, buffing, bonding and matching the removal method to the product protect the natural nail.
How long does a gel manicure last?
Properly prepped gel polish usually holds 2 to 3 weeks before regrowth shows. Builder gel and polygel enhancements go longer between fills because they reinforce the nail structure rather than just coating it.
